The story unfolds in a remote village where ancient traditions clash with modern authority. Shiva (Rishab Shetty, who also writes and directs), a volatile, demigod-like buffalo hunter, lives wild and free in the forest, bound to his community by ritual and rebellion. His life, steeped in local lore and liquor, is thrown into chaos when a principled Forest Officer, Murali (Kishore), arrives to enforce the law on disputed land. What begins as a territorial feud unravels into a deeper, spiritual war—a conflict between divine will, human greed, and the forgotten pact between man and nature.

At the film's core is the Bhoota Kola, a breathtaking, real-life annual ritual where a mortal becomes the vessel for a divine spirit, the Daiva. Kantara masterfully uses this ritual as the narrative's heartbeat and explosive climax. The line between myth and reality blurs, leading to a final sequence of such primal, emotional, and visual power that it has become legendary in contemporary Indian cinema.
